Kiln-Dried Hardwood Logs FAQs
1. What Are Kiln-Dried Hardwood Logs?
Kiln-dried hardwood logs are logs that have been dried in a specialised kiln to reduce the moisture content (typically to below 20%). The kiln-drying process makes the logs dry out faster than naturally seasoned (air-dried) firewood. This means kiln-dried hardwood burns hotter and longer than seasoned logs, making it a great choice for wood burners, multi-fuel stoves, pizza ovens, firepits and fireplaces.
2. How Are Kiln-Dried Hardwood Logs Made?
Kiln-dried hardwood logs are made by drying cut and split logs in a heated, temperature-controlled kiln to lower their moisture content. The drying process continues until the logs reach their desired moisture content (typically below 20%).
At Westdale Logs, we are committed to sustainability in everything we do. Our freshly cut and split hardwood is first air dried in our barn to reduce the initial moisture content before being loaded into our unique solar-powered kiln. During the winter months, we run our kiln on battery stores to further reduce our impact on the environment.
3. Why Choose Kiln-Dried Hardwood Over Seasoned Firewood?
Kiln-dried hardwood is the best choice for log burners and wood-burning stoves because of its superior heat output. You’ll need fewer kiln-dried logs to produce the same amount of heat as seasoned logs.
Kiln-dried logs have a much lower moisture content than seasoned logs, so they burn hotter, cleaner and for a longer time, with minimal smoke output. The kiln-drying process means that the hardwood logs are dried evenly, so kiln-dried logs won’t slow down when burning due to a wet spot, which can be a problem with seasoned logs.
4. What Is the Moisture Content of Kiln-Dried Hardwood?
All our kiln-dried hardwood at Westdale Logs is Ready to Burn certified with a moisture content below 20%. However, typically the moisture content is slightly lower than this, usually around 18%. Ready to Burn certification means that our hardwood can be burned in compliance with Air Quality Regulations and can be used in Smoke Control areas such as Sheffield and Chesterfield.
5. What Types of Wood Are Used for Kiln-Dried Hardwood Logs?
Our kiln-dried hardwood logs are mostly ash, which is renowned for its excellent burning qualities, as well as other high-quality hardwoods, such as beech, cherry and birch.
6. Are Kiln-Dried Hardwood Logs Suitable for All Wood-Burning Appliances?
Yes, kiln-dried hardwood logs are suitable for all types of wood-burning appliances. They can be used in wood burners, multi-fuel stoves, pizza ovens, fireplaces or even outdoor firepits. Because of their high heat and minimal smoke output, they can be used both indoors and outdoors.
7. How Should I Store Kiln-Dried Hardwood Logs?
When it comes to storing your kiln-dried logs, you should choose a dry, low-humidity environment indoors or a well-ventilated log store outdoors. Here are some of our recommended locations:
- A garage or a shed can be a good choice for your kiln-dried logs as they offer protection from the elements. However, it’s important to elevate your logs off the floor to prevent moisture and allow for plenty of air circulation. Stacking your logs in a criss-cross pattern ensures your logs remain dry and well-ventilated.
- A purpose-built log store is the best choice as it will offer protection from bad weather but still allow for plenty of airflow. Most log stores have a raised floor to keep your logs off the ground and open sides for air circulation. Choose a sheltered spot for your log store that gets plenty of sunlight.
8. Where Do You Deliver Your Kiln-Dried Hardwood To?
At Westdale Logs, we offer free local delivery to Sheffield, Chesterfield and the Hope Valley. Our unique vented bulk bags encourage airflow to prevent your kiln-dried hardwood from getting damp. Plus, our logs are delivered with a complimentary rain poncho on rainy days to ensure they stay dry.
We aim to deliver all orders within two weeks, but this lead time can be increased in extremely busy periods. You can view our current lead time at the top of our website. If you need your hardwood logs immediately, check out our Kiln Dried Hardwood Bulk Bag with Next Working Day Delivery.
9. Is Your Kiln-Dried Hardwood Sustainable?
At Westdale Logs, we are committed to sustainability, and we source a portion of our hardwood from the Peak Park or the National Trust each year. All our hardwood logs are dried in our sustainable solar-powered kiln with battery stores used over the winter months. You can be sure that buying from us is always an eco-friendly choice.
10. What Size Are Your Hardwood Logs?
When it comes to buying our kiln-dried hardwood logs, you choose between an approximate size of 8-10 inches or 10-12 inches. This allows you to choose the best size of hardwood for your wood-burning appliance, helping you get the most efficient burn.
11. How Long Does Kiln-Dried Hardwood Burn For?
Our mixed kiln-dried hardwood consists mostly of ash and beech logs, which burn for around 1-2 hours, producing around 4 kw of heat. Kiln-dried hardwood burns for considerably longer and at higher temperatures than traditional seasoned firewood, resulting in a much higher quality burn.
