Kindling Wood FAQs

1. What Size Are Your Kindling Bags?

Our kindling log nets are 40cm x 60cm. You can purchase a single bag of kindling or save money with a bundle of 10 kindling log nets!

2. What Size is the Kindling?

Our kindling is around 6-8 inches long and about the thickness of your thumb. This makes it thin enough to light quickly but large enough to sustain a flame and help transfer heat to larger logs. All our kindling has a low moisture content to help it ignite quickly and burn efficiently.

3. Is Your Kindling Kiln-Dried?

Yes, like all our firewood, our kindling has also been dried in our unique solar-powered temperature-controlled kiln. This method reduces the kindling’s moisture content to under 20%, helping it burn hotter and for longer.

4. Is Your Kindling Ready to Burn Certified?

Yes, all our kiln-dried kindling and firewood at Westdale Logs is Ready to Burn certified with a moisture content below 20% (the actual moisture content is typically around 18%).  Ready to Burn certification means our kindling and logs can be burnt in compliance with Air Quality Regulations and can be used in Smoke Control areas such as Sheffield, Chesterfield and Buxton close to the Peak District

5. What Is Kindling Wood Used For?

Kindling is small, dry pieces of wood that are used to start and sustain a fire. It should ignite easily and burn hot to help larger logs catch fire. Kindling is typically arranged in a small pyramid shape with gaps for airflow, around a fire starter. Our kindling is suitable for a wide range of uses, including wood-burning stoves, multi-fuel stoves, fireplaces, firepits and pizza ovens

6. How Should I Store Kindling Wood?

You might want to store a small amount of your kindling wood indoors, close by to your fire or wood-burning stove. A round Hessian-lined log basket is ideal for this. Just ensure that you keep far enough away from your stove or fire to prevent hazards.

For larger quantities of kindling, you’ll need to store it somewhere dry, such as a garage or log store. Our kindling comes in convenient nets which are easy to store and also breathable - this means you can store your kindling directly in the bag for added convenience. Moisture can be absorbed from the ground, so it’s best to raise your bag of logs off the ground, for example, by using pallets.

7. How Long Does Kindling Wood Last?

Kindling wood is not designed to last for a long time. It’s designed to light quickly and help larger logs set on fire. A handful of kindling might last for between 5 and 15 minutes.

8. What’s the Best Way to Light Kindling?

To light your kindling effectively, follow these steps:

  1. Start with a firelighter or crumpled paper.
  2. Add dry kindling in a criss-cross pattern or a pyramid (teepee) shape above the firelighter or paper.
  3. Use a long match or lighter to light the paper or firelighter.
  4. Wait for a hot, strong and consistent flame with glowing embers.
  5. Add larger logs gradually to build the main fire.

9. Can I Use Kindling for Fire Pits?

Yes, kindling is a key component for successfully starting a fire in a fire pit. It helps to set the larger logs on fire, providing a steady and consistent burn that’s ideal for evenings around a fire pit in your garden or camping.
