Kiln-Dried Pizza Oven Logs FAQs
1. What Are Kiln-Dried Pizza Oven Logs?
Kiln-dried pizza oven logs are specially designed for use in pizza ovens. They are typically hardwood logs that have been cut thinner and longer so that they reach high temperatures quickly, which is ideal for cooking authentic-tasting Italian-style pizzas! Their size also makes them easier to stack within a pizza oven for easy lighting.
2. How Are Kiln-Dried Pizza Oven Logs Made?
Kiln-dried pizza oven logs are made by drying thinly cut and split logs in a heated, temperature-controlled kiln. This lowers their moisture content to around 18%, so that they burn hot and clean in pizza ovens.
At Westdale Logs, we always try to be as sustainable as possible in the drying of our logs. Our hardwood pizza oven logs are first air dried in our barn to reduce the initial moisture content before being loaded into our unique solar-powered kiln. In the colder months of the year, we use battery stores to power our kiln to further reduce our environmental impact.
3. What Is the Moisture Content of Your Kiln-Dried Pizza Oven Logs?
All our hardwood pizza oven logs at Westdale Logs are Ready to Burn certified with a moisture content below 20%. However, the moisture content of our hardwood is typically slightly lower than this, around 18% on average. Our Ready to Burn certification means that our pizza oven logs can be burned in compliance with Air Quality Regulations and can be used in Smoke Control areas such as Sheffield and Chesterfield.
4. What Size Are Your Pizza Oven Logs?
Our kiln-dried logs for pizza ovens are cut longer and thinner for a superior pizza oven experience.
5. What Type of Wood Is Best for Pizza Ovens?
Hardwood is typically preferred over softwood when it comes to pizza ovens. Hardwood logs tend to burn hotter and for longer due to their density. This makes hardwood logs ideal for achieving the high temperatures required for pizza cooking. Hardwood also burns more consistently, ensuring your pizza cooks evenly for a better flavour.
At Westdale Logs, our logs for pizza ovens are made from a mixture of premium hardwood, including ash, which is renowned for its excellent burning qualities, as well as beech, cherry and birch.
6. Why Avoid Softwood in a Pizza Oven?
You should avoid using softwoods in a pizza oven because they burn too quickly, which makes it difficult to sustain the high temperature needed for a pizza oven. Softwoods also produce more smoke and can release which can have a negative impact on the taste of your wood-fired pizza!
7. Are Kiln-Dried Logs Better Than Seasoned Logs for Pizza Ovens?
Yes, there are numerous benefits to choosing kiln-dried logs over seasoned logs for your pizza oven, including:
- More consistent heat. Kiln-dried logs have a lower moisture content than seasoned logs (our logs are typically around 18%), which means they produce a more intense and consistent heat, perfect for making great-tasting pizza!
- Faster heat-up time. Kiln-dried logs take less time to get hot than seasoned logs, so you start cooking (and eating!) your pizza quicker.
- Reduced smoke. Wood with a high moisture content can lead to excess smoke, which can affect the taste of your pizza and ruin the pizza cooking experience. Kiln-dried logs burn clean and hot, so you won’t have to worry about excess smoke.
- Longer burning time. Kiln-dried wood stays hot for longer, so you can cook multiple pizzas without needing to top up your pizza oven.
8. Can I Use Pizza Oven Logs in a Fire Pit?
Yes, pizza oven logs can absolutely be used in a fire pit! Just be aware that pizza oven logs have been cut thinner and longer so that they burn best in pizza ovens. If you’re looking for kiln-dried wood for your fire pit or wood-burning stove, we recommend our range of kiln-dried hardwood. This is the same premium wood but cut a little thicker for a greater range of applications.
9. How Should I Store Pizza Oven Logs?
To properly store your kiln-dried pizza oven logs, you need to choose a dry location with low humidity and plenty of ventilation. We recommend a garage or shed to provide your pizza oven logs with protection from the elements. Alternatively, a well-ventilated log store outdoors can also be a good choice. Wherever you store your pizza oven logs, make sure that the logs are elevated off the floor to prevent moisture build-up and increase air circulation.
