Regulations on Burning Firewood in the Peak District

In the Peak District, Buxton is one of the only areas designated as a smoke control area. This means you must ensure your appliance is exempt or only burn authorised fuels, such as Ready to Burn certified firewood. Even if you are not located in a smoke control area, there are still regulations that control the moisture content of firewood sold in smaller quantities.

Ready to Burn

The Air Quality (Domestic Solid Fuels Standards) (England) Regulations 2020 state that all firewood sold in quantities below 2m³ must be certified as ‘Ready to Burn’. This means it must have a certified moisture content below 20%. At Westdale Logs, we are proud to be certified with Ready To Burn. This means our kiln-dried firewood can be legally sold in smaller quantities and is classed as an authorised fuel, so it can be burned in smoke control areas such as Buxton!

Certified Wood Burning Stoves

If you live in Buxton, you should ensure that your wood-burning or multi-fuel stoves are DEFRA-approved exempt appliances. You should always use the specified fuel type for your appliance and follow the manufacturer's instructions to reduce your smoke output.
