Ready to Burn Logs

Ready to Burn legislation banned the sale of the most polluting fuels used in homes, including house coal and wet wood. Firewood sold in volumes of up to 2m³ in England now needs to be Ready to Burn certified as having a moisture content of less than 20%.

At Westdale Logs, we are proud to be certified with Ready To Burn. Buying from us means you can be sure your logs are below 20% moisture and will burn cleanly and efficiently.

About Westdale Logs

At Westdale Logs, we specialise in providing high-quality, sustainably sourced kiln-dried logs which burn cleanly and efficiently. Whether you need cost-effective firewood delivered quickly for your home wood burner or regular deliveries to ensure your restaurant’s pizza oven is always fully stocked, we should be your first choice.

Our Sustainable Approach

We use our unique solar-powered kiln to dry out logs with battery stores used over the winter months, reducing our carbon footprint and promoting renewable energy. Our team sources a portion of our firewood from Peak Park or National Trust each year so we can be as eco-friendly as possible.

Our Kiln Drying Process

Unlike a lot of other firewood companies, we produce all year round. Our split firewood goes straight into vented cages. These cages are then air-dried in an open barn to allow the moisture to escape. This means our logs need less time in our solar-powered kiln, helping us be more sustainable. Firewood is best kiln-dried to give an even drying profile across the whole log.

Kiln Dried Logs FAQs

What Are Kiln-Dried Logs?

Kiln-dried logs are logs that have been dried in a kiln to reduce their moisture content. To be legally sold in England, kiln-dried logs must be Ready to Burn certified with an overall average moisture content below 20%. To be dried effectively, Ready to Burn logs are placed in a kiln between 60 and 70°C. This process typically takes between a few days and a week, depending on the kiln and the type of wood being dried.

What Is the Difference Between Kiln-Dried and Seasoned Logs?

The main difference between kiln-dried and seasoned logs is the drying process. Kiln-dried logs are artificially dried in a hot kiln to reduce their moisture content. However, seasoned logs are dried naturally in the open air which can take several years.

Which Is Best Kiln Dried or Seasoned Logs?

Kiln-dried logs offer superior burn efficiency compared to seasoned logs. These logs are ready to burn immediately and burn hotter and more cleanly. The kiln-drying process means the logs are dried evenly so the burn rate doesn’t slow down when the fire reaches a wet spot, which can be a problem with seasoned logs. This makes them a popular fuel for wood burners.

However, seasoned logs are typically cheaper than kiln-dried logs, but this comes at the expense of poorer burn quality.

How to Store Kiln-Dried Logs?

Although it’s best to store kiln-dried logs indoors in a dry, low-humidity environment, they can also be stored outside in a log store or garage. However, you’ll need to ensure that your logs have sufficient airflow. You should:

  • Avoid covering them completely.
  • Keep them off the ground.
  • Avoid stacking them against a wall.
  • Position your log store in direct sunlight.
  • Use a rain cover when the weather is bad.

How Long Do Kiln-Dried Logs Burn For?

How long kiln-dried logs take to burn will depend on their type, size and moisture content. For example, an average-sized oak log will burn for approximately 2-3 hours. Softer types of hardwood will likely have a slightly shorter burn time.

Are Kiln-Dried Logs Environmentally Friendly?

Kiln-dried logs can be much better for the environment than other types of fuel provided they are sourced and dried sustainably. At Westdale Logs, we are committed to sustainably producing high-quality kiln-dried firewood. We source a portion of our logs from local sustainable forests and all our wood is dried in our efficient and solar-powered kiln. Plus, our kiln-dried wood is only delivered to local homes and businesses helping to further reduce our carbon footprint.
